6 best supermarket ice creams to buy this summer
Waitrose No.1 Belgian dark chocolate & sour cherry dairy ice cream
- Available from Waitrose (£4.40/480ml)

Forget plain chocolate ice cream – we've fallen for this dark chocolate and sour cherry tub from Waitrose. The chocolate ice cream base is not bitter, and instead tastes like creamy milk chocolate, with a rounded flavour that isn't too sweet (meaning you can go back for another scoop). The cherry ripple and chunks of cherries throughout add enjoyable fruitiness – we just wish there were more!
Available from:
Waitrose (£4.40/480ml)
Aldi Specially Selected Madagascan vanilla ice cream
- Available from Aldi (£2.39/480ml)

If you're a traditionalist when it comes to ice cream, this is the vanilla you should be buying this summer.
It's a classic that's done well: rich, creamy and luxurious, with an almost custard-like flavour. You can see the vanilla seeds running through, giving it a high-quality feel. It's also perfectly balanced, without being sickly sweet. Scoop this into sundaes, stuff into a banana split or ice cream sandwiches, or serve with any of your favourite summer desserts.
Available from:
Aldi (£2.39/480ml)
Waitrose peach melba dairy ice cream
- Available from Waitrose (£3.40/480ml)

Fans of fruitier ice creams should give this peach melba tub from Waitrose a go. Inspired by the classic dessert, it has a base of a light peach ice cream swirled with a raspberry ripple and studded with peach pieces. We enjoyed the chunks of juicy peach and the overall refreshing, light feel – it's perfect for a hot day when you don't want anything too rich. You could even add a scoop of this ice cream to our peach melba sundae recipe from Tom Kerridge for maximum summer feels.
If you're a fan of peach melba flavours, we've got plenty more recipes to try: check out our peach melba roulade or no-cook peach melba cheesecake.

Morrisons The Best caffe latte ice cream
- Available from Morrisons (£3.40/480ml)

For a more grown-up ice cream, try this caffe latte creation from Morrisons. It has a strong coffee flavour that will appeal to coffee lovers, with roasted bitterness that cuts through the richness of the ice cream. The texture is mousse-like and light, creating a creamy latte or cappuccino feel.
It's great on its own, or try using it in our impressive coffee ice cream terrine for a no-bake entertaining dessert.

Morrisons (£3.40/480ml)
Booths after dinner mint ice cream
- Available from Booths in-store (£3.65/500ml)

Mint chocolate chip is an enduring, nostalgic favourite. This offering from Booths has a fresh mint flavour that isn't too strong (no toothpaste taste here) and appealing pale green hue. Mini chunks of chocolate are evenly dispersed throughout and create a good contrast of flavour to the mint base, as well as added texture.
Available from:
Booths in-store (£3.65/500ml)
Tesco Finest pistachio gelato
- Available from Tesco (£4.50/480ml)

There's no escaping pistachio this summer, as it continues to trend in everything from chocolate bars and cheesecake, to tiramisu. Ice cream is no exception, and this tub from Tesco is our pick. It has a heavily roasted pistachio flavour and attractive-looking chunks of the nut on the top, although they can be a bit soft. The ice cream itself is soft and aerated, and made with pistachio paste for a full, nutty flavour.
